Stepping Out

A walk along a Rishton Route

The programme of led walks began in October 2002, with the scheme being officially launched 10th November 2002.
There are a number of weekly walks in different locations across Hyndburn, including Rishton, Church, Clayton and a newly established one in Great Harwood. Routes are fairly flat and approximately an hour in length and are open to all.
The scheme has links with a number of local organisations, including Sure Start, Age Concern, Asian groups and carers' groups, as well as with the Exercise on Prescription scheme. It plans to build on these to create specifically targeted walking groups.
There are independent walking packs available which include a series of self-guided interconnecting walks across various areas of Hyndburn.

AUTUMN 2007 NEWS:

The Stepping Out Project has been going since 2002. We now have 9 led walks a week, with an average attendance of 20 people on each walk, with up to 60 walkers on our busiest walks. Attendance figures for April’06 – April’07 were 6728, an increase of over 2000 on the previous year. We currently have 32 dedicated volunteers who support and led our walks.

This Autumn, Stepping Out is going to be releasing it’s 2nd Independent Walking Pack. This pack contains 12 routes around Accrington Central, Spring Hill and Oswaldtwistle. All routes have been graded as to their difficultly, length and their pushchair suitability. These packs are a way of introducing people to walking or they can be the next step for more confident walkers, encouraging them to walk faster and further than we can do on the led walk programme. The 1st Independent Pack is still available and covers the areas of Rishton, Clayton and Church. For more information or to receive your free Walking Pack please call Fran Riley on 01254 356873.

Our aim is to encourage more people to enjoy the health benefits of walking – particularly those people who may not otherwise be active, or would like some support to get them going and keep them motivated!!

To help you make walking a regular part of your life we offer a variety of led-walks throughout the week. All Walks are an hour long, unless otherwise stated
Please turn up in comfortable clothing and bring any medication that you may need. If you are diabetic bring a sugary drink. We take on walkers of all abilities.

If you haven’t done much exercise recently and are worried about your health, please see your doctor before taking part in any activities. Regular walking to make you breathless not speechless is the key to improving your health
